everyone here's been talking about the election since i got here. i haven't met an american abroad voting for mccain, and everyone seems very much attune to what's been going on. parties for every debate, american-themed food in uni restaurants and shops for the past week, multiple watch parties tonight.
yesterday (well, now the day before) after slavery, my presentation group went out for a drink and the election came up. guy asked if everyone was supporting obama and four of us said, of course, but nick said he wanted a maverick in the white house. all four of us fell for it at first, but once we realized he was taking the piss, he started telling us about american-baiting with that response and how easy it was. the other three seconded this and asked me why. it took a minute to impress up on them how much the american abroad has had to contend with the bush regime and how we just couldn't face the idea of having to tell the world that we'd elected him to a third term. they had to think back a bit - especially philippa and nick who spent last year in schools in cali - but they mostly conceded they'd made those sorts of assumptions about americans beforehand.
but it's finally over. and we've done it right this time.
